Baseball Salaries

The abilities to filter data and subtotal data are among Excel's most useful tools.

We played in class with Major League Baseball data that provided information on each player: name, position, team, league and salary. We saw that some simple sorting, filtering and subtotaling we could find information for all manner of stories.

You assignment is to play around with the data a little more. See what you can find by sorting, filtering and subtotaling, the questions you can ask and answer.

Write down the questions you ask and the answers, for example:

1) Which league's payroll is the largest the National League or the American League?

National League: $XXXXXX

American League: $XXXXX

Write brief budget lines of stories that could come out of your questions, , for example:

The FIU Golden Panthers paid its players more than any other team in baseball, but still had the fourth-worst record of the 2006 season.

Here's the salary data we looked at in class.

Here are tutorials on Applying Data Filters in Excel and Subtotals in Excel.
