Monthly Schedules

To analyze how the Hollywood Police Department administers off-duty work details, The Herald requested a year's worth of monthly schedules for 61 active, permanent details worked during the fiscal year — Oct. 1, 1997 to Sept. 30, 1998 — a total of nearly 22,000 shifts in all.

The paper records, kept on nearly 800 calendar sheets, were entered into a computerized database, which ultimately contained information on more than 21,000 off-duty shifts.

Many of the handwritten paper records were incomplete, with one or more months missing. Others were nearly illegible, and the officer on a shift or its exact times could not be read. Some showed incorrect dates or had the schedule for one month entered on a calendar sheet for another.

Hollywood Police officials answered most of the resulting questions. Where they could not answer questions about particular shifts, those shifts — no more than a few hundred in all — were not included in the final analysis.
