Florida leads the nation in boating accidents, though the problem is widespread throughout the country.  Most accidents occur during the daytime and the drivers escape uninjured.

 

Key Findings

·  There were 3,045 boating accidents nationwide in 2002.

·  Nearly a third of total, 1,001 of them, occurred in Florida.

·  Alocohol is a factor in about 40 percent of all accidents; driver error accounts for most of the rest.

·  About 23 percent of boating accidents involve boaters hitting other boats.

 

Other Findings

About two-thirds of all Florida boating accidents occurred in South Florida.

About 74 percent of drivers are male.

Most accidents occur between noon and 6 p.m.

Only about 1 percent of boating accidents involve a pleasure craft hitting a ship.
